Tuna Thoran or Tuna Stir Fry

Today I am posting the recipe of Canned Tuna Thoran or Canned Tuna Stir Fry. A very easy and quick recipe to make. I remember the first time we got canned tuna at home. One of my cousins had returned from Mali and along with chocolates he brought some canned tuna to our home. My mom was confused as to what she should prepare with canned tuna. Not being the age of internet and not being familiar with much non veg dishes, she tried out a stir fry with the canned tuna.. They didnt turn that good and never again was canned tuna prepared at my home... Years later in US, somehow my eyes fell on a can of Tuna at our usual grocery shop and I started wondering what I can prepare with it. Got it as usual on impulse and then I started searching for recipes that I can make with Canned tuna online. I have adapted the recipe from here and tried at home. It came out so well that my hubby has started buying canned tuna every week and asking me to make it. Go ahead and try the recipe... Its for keeps :)

Canned Tuna Thoran or Tuna Stir Fry:

Prep Time: 5 min
Cook Time: 10 - 15 min
Total time: 20 min

Ingredients ( for 2 people)

1 can of Albacore Tuna in water
1 small onion or preferably 10 - 15 shallots
1 inch ginger
3 garlic cloves
1/2 of a green chilly
1/4 Tbsp Turmeric
1 Tbsp Chilly powder
1/2 - 3/4 Tbsp Pepper powder (Optional)
1/3 - 1/4 cup Grated Coconut
1 Tbsp Cumin seeds
Juice of half a lemon
1 Tbsp Mustard Seeds
1 Tbsp Oil
3 - 4 Curry Leaves
Coriander Leaves for garnishing

Step 1: Cut onion, ginger, garlic, green chilly into small pieces.

Step 2: Open the canned tuna and drain the water. Wash the tuna thoroughly.

Step 3: Grind the grated coconut, cumin seeds and little salt to a smooth paste adding very little water. The mixture should be semi dry.

Method of Preparing:

Step 1:

Heat 1 Tbsp oil in a pan. When the oil becomes hot, add mustard seeds. Once it crackles, add  the onions and curry leaves and saute till they are slightly brown. Add ginger, garlic and saute for 2 min. Then add green chilly and saute for a minute.

Step 2:

Now lower the flame and add turmeric powder and chilly powder. Stir for 2 min.

Step 3:

Add the canned tuna and salt and stir till everything is mixed. Cover and cook for 3 to 5 min till the tuna is almost cooked.

Step 4:

Then add pepper powder if you are using and the juice of half a lemon. Stir for a min and add the ground paste. Cook covered for 3 - 5 min and yummy Tuna Thoran is ready. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with Rice or Dosa or Chappathi.

Note: Instead of grinding the coconut, you can simply add them as well and skip the cumin seeds. Please adjust pepper powder and chilly powder as per your liking of spiciness.
